The last time I headed out skiing before meeting my husband I spent a week in La Plagne in April enjoying the slopes and apres ski that was still in full force nothing like end of season in a summer holiday resort plus some of the summer activities were starting to creep into the off the slope activities so it was easy to mix things like paddle boarding on the lakes in the valley’s for 1 day with fantastic skiing in the resorts.

But is the snow actually any good for skiing in spring?

Well YES – a lot of the high altitude resorts in France like Val Thorens, Les Arcs, La Plagne and Les Meniures have regular snow fall through till April and as I look back at Les Arcs where we skiied before Christmas the snow levels have tripled on the high slopes and with 1m+ of snow down onto the lower slopes there is so many more runs to explore.

What else makes it good to ski in spring?

LONGER DAYS – surprise surprise but you can’t ski at night in most places so early to mid season everything stops at around 4 to 4:30 with the lifts at the top of the mountain closing earlier – with longer days you get longer skiing, or if you have younger kids playing in the snow with them after a busy day on the slopes.

How does it compare to Feburary Half Term?

I grew up skiing in February Half Term – there were queues for the lifts, I had to learn quickly how to dodge slower skiers and do that look behind you as you cross onto a new run because places were busy. Panic every time I put my skis in the slots outside a resturant in case someone picked them up by mistake. But, Spring at Easter – still within school holidays but the complete opposite, the slopes were free of lots of people, the queues even though I was there when it was the Brtish University Ski Championship were fairly empty and there were places it sit in the sun outside of the resturants with no queues for ordering!
