Holiday Horrors
Although I do love travelling and I love to travel with the kids it is not always smiling faces and picture perfect scenes. In fact, over the last 20 years of travel solo and then with my husband and now as a family we have had our moments! I thought I would let you on a couple of holiday horrors that we have had.

Travelling with Pregnant – Kefalonia
My favourite place in Greece is the island of Kefalonia – it’s one that I have returned to time and time again and we decided that for our first family holiday with a 13-month-old and 16 weeks pregnant with number 2 we would head off at the end of the season for 2 weeks returning to the apartments that we had stayed in before with the in-laws!
The apartments were just as we remembered perched high up on the hill overlooking the town of Lassi and the sea. Picture perfect sunsets when it wasn’t raining, gorgeous rooms unless you were stuck in them for days as the rain poured and poured.

What I hadn’t realised and probably should have when we booked it was that it was at the top of a hill – the supermarket, tavernas that we had loved on our previous visit were all at the bottom of the hill. A very steep hill at that. But, we had a good buggy and stuck the 13-month-old in it and went down the hill.
What happens when a pregnant lady walks up the hill pushing said buggy later in the day – well, unfortunately, it results in causing contractions at 16 weeks pregnant and going to the nearest hospital – in a different town leaving the in-laws with a very upset little J whose first teeth were coming through and spending the day being monitored as it looked like I would be losing the baby. Luckily everything settled down – but instead of a restful holiday in the sun. It turned into a bed rest for a couple of days and taxi’s down to the town.
The time the kids ate toast – Lanzarote
After the Kefalonia trip, we decided to wait a little while once T was born before heading abroad and thought that an All Inclusive holiday resort would be good – with an 18-month-old and a 3-year-old what could go wrong?

Well, you’ve probably heard me say before but I have picky eaters – like really picky and All Inclusive means food is provided and it was in a buffet style which my kids don’t like.
For the week that we were there, the kids ate – TOAST, every single meal. They wouldn’t even eat their favourite food from the UK which was served for the kids menu. The resort was nice, pools, play areas for the kids but the meal times turned into nightmares. Even breakfast was a nightmare! Never again will we return to an all inclusive resort not whilst the kids are still picky.
A little luxury for less
Despite bed rest whilst pregnant, a week of toast, and many other incidents that I retell you from my backpacking days – the rainstorm in Panama where the water came through the roof, window and floor of our water villa and my bikini took flight – stopping travel isn’t for us, however, we have rethought some of our holiday plans and travelling with a little luxury makes even the bad bits a lot better.
Luxury, can be expensive, though, right? WRONG – Luxury for Less is your one-stop-shop for finding great holidays for the family. Using Sky Scanner to find the best flights, reviews, and recommendations to get the best hotels and combining them you can really get Luxury holidays for less. For me, our honeymoon to the Maldives was our Luxury holiday – what I wouldn’t give to return there with the kids! I’m off to check out Luxury for Less to see where it will take us next.
