Tips for avoiding summer travel meltdowns from toddlers

#1. Make sure your toddler is well fed.

Any mom or dad of a toddler knows that feeding them is hit or mess. When you’re traveling, try to get them to eat a good meal.

When they are full, they are less likely to have mood swings that cause the meltdowns. I always try to feed my toddler her favorite meal before we head out. At least I know she’s full and is less likely to have that meltdown.

If you can when you travel pack a few of their favourite snacks and look for meals that you know that they will eat. We still pack the snacks even with our older kids it makes something a little familiar.

#2. Hydration is important.

Just as adults get a little moody when they’re dehydrated, so can toddlers.

Traveling can take a lot out of a person, which is why hydration is key. Drinking lots of water, not sugary drinks, can really help keep your toddler hydrated and hopefully help them avoid meltdowns while traveling.

Make sure you set a good example for your toddler by also drinking lots of water.

#3. Take breaks as needed.

Very few toddlers can travel for hours and hours without taking a break.

Another top tip for helping your toddler avoid meltdowns while traveling is by taking breaks as needed. Stop the car every few hours so that your toddler can stretch their legs or get out of the seat on the plane and have a walk around.

Of course, if your toddler is sleeping, all bets are off and you just keep going. Never wake a sleeping toddler because then the meltdowns that you were trying to avoid will ensue.

 #4. Bring a favorite toy.

Toddlers need something familiar with them when they’re traveling.

You can help your toddler avoid meltdowns by bringing their favorite toy with them.

It’s amazing how a small toy that they love can help avoid them getting upset. Of course, you don’t want to lose that toy because then a different onslaught of meltdowns can happen.

You can also bring along a busy bag. This is a bag that you have on hand when your toddler gets bored. It has different activities, so you can pull out a new activity as needed. It’s a sanity saver while traveling.

#5. Spend time entertaining your toddler.

If you’re flying or the passenger in your car, one of the best things you can do is spend time with your toddler.
